Frequently Asked Questions
IPE has a Class A fire rating comparable to steel or concrete, which means it can be used near a firepit.
To ensure product stability, the IPE wood used for Bison Wood Deck Tiles is both kiln and air dried. Bison IPE Wood Deck Tiles contain 8-12% moisture content, but moisture content may vary based on the location where they are installed after acclimating to the installation location.
Unlike pressure-treated lumber, IPE wood decking is rated to last a minimum of 25 years or much longer and is naturally resistant to insects, rot and fungus, without the need for insecticides or chemicals. Its smooth, splinter-free surfaces make IPE ideal for surfaces like decks where people may walk barefoot. Not only is IPE extremely attractive, but it also air-dries quickly and maintains its structural integrity.
Sometimes known as Ironwood or Brazilian Walnut, IPE (pronounced ee-pay), IPE is a very dense tropical hardwood with a straight grain. For decking purposes, IPE’s heartwood is used. The longest-lasting outdoor wood, IPE can last as long as 75 years.
Unlike deck building techniques that rely on excavation and aggregate, deck supports generally do not
shift with ground frost because they hold no moisture. To prevent any shifting, we recommend building
your deck in sandy soil, which holds less moisture and is less affected by any freeze-thaw cycles. Avoid
clay soil, which holds a lot of moisture, which can then move & shift as a result of freeze-thaw cycles.
The possibilities are endless! Bison pedestals support wood or composite planks, prefabricated wood
tiles, stone, porcelain paver or planks or even artificial turf.
Installing a rooftop pedestal system is a simple process, and because it is not attached to your roof, it
will cause no damage to expensive roofing systems.
Bison pedestals are easy enough for nearly any DIY’er to install. The installation process is easy, straightforward and eliminates most of the labour that other methods require. Adjustable deck supports significantly reduce the man-hours needed for your installation along with necessary materials. This translates to a more cost-effective project with fewer problems. Beyond the installation phase, whenever you need access to something below, you won’t need to rip up areas of your deck or patio – simply lift a tile to access what lies beneath and replace it once finished – it really could not be any easier! Bison pedestals are just as easy to remove if you ever want to dismantle your project.
Bison pedestals and their surface materials protect the roof below them from the elements. Your roof gets less exposure to harmful UV rays, wind, hail and water damage, all of which impact your roof’s integrity. This extra layer of protection and support can sometimes double your roof’s lifespan, saving you thousands of dollars in repairs, maintenance and replacement expenses.
Sometimes known as adjustable deck supports, Bison pedestals offer exceptional versatility and are useful in a variety of applications. Use Bison pedestals for outdoor decking, raised patios, green roofs, poolside decks, or rooftop decks and patios. Anywhere you want to enjoy the benefits of a raised floor, Bison pedestals are the tool you need. The nature of a pedestal system means that water drainage is instant, making them ideal for around the pool or on rooftops. Bison adjustable pedestals are compatible with porcelain pavers, Ipe wood deck tiles or any other type of paver used as your decking surface.
Selecting the ideal Bison Pedestal for your project largely depends on the flexibility of the component and its functionality alongside your project. Bison pedestals come in three types: fixed height, adjustable and stackable. Perfect for both contractors and DIY’ers, Bison pedestals are easy to use in a wide range of applications.
With this in mind, compatibility with the project must be considered before choosing a pedestal. Luckily, all types are quick and easy to install without causing damage to your underlying surface, including expensive roofing systems. All are weather-resistant alternatives to wood, and all are fitted with patented features designed to improve stability and performance.
For whichever project you have, the Bison Pedestal System has opened a world of design possibilities and is sure to deliver smart and creative solutions.

Bison Pedestals are manufactured with 20% post-industrial materials and have patented features that improve functionality and stability. Their modular pedestal system allows you to install rooftops quickly, without causing damage to expensive roofing systems.
With impressive load-bearing strength, Bison pedestals can support various surface materials in a variety of projects ranging from driveways, walkways, decks and patios to rooftop applications like rooftop decks and green roofs.
Bison pedestals are available in three styles, including Versadjust adjustable deck supports. With an adjustable height from 2 ¼ to 36 inches, Versadjust deck pedestals provide support for virtually any situation. With built-in slope base compensation, Bison Versajust pedestals can be adjusted on the fly, tool-free for height and slope.
To know the number of pedestals you’ll need, count the number of tiles you will install across the length and width of the space, and add one to each of these numbers. Multiply these numbers together to get the pedestals you’ll need. For example, if your design is 5 tiles long x 4 tiles wide, you’ll need 30 pedestals.
